Project Overview:

​

The renovation of the Yotoku-in Garden at Myoshin-ji Temple was initiated in preparation for the head priest’s succession to the role of deputy head priest. Due to our longstanding relationship managing the temple’s maintenance, we were entrusted with this project.

 

Design and Planning:

 

　·Client Consultation: At the request of a donor, the garden was to feature a flowing water design. The design incorporated an existing well, from which water flows into a newly created stream and pond.

　·Viewing Perspectives: The garden was designed to be viewed from multiple vantage points, including the main hall on the right in the provided photograph, and the study hall at the back, which was not constructed at the time of the initial design. The garden also provided access to the cemetery located at the back of the property.

Implementation:

 

　·Water Feature: The design centered around a natural water flow, starting from the existing well and culminating in a pond, creating a serene and dynamic landscape.

　·Accessibility: The approach path was redesigned to ensure ease of access for all visitors, enhancing the overall experience of the garden.

 

Outcome:

The renovated Yotoku-in Garden now offers a tranquil and aesthetically pleasing environment that can be appreciated from various points within the temple grounds, providing both a visual and meditative experience for visitors. The thoughtful integration of the water feature and improved accessibility have significantly enhanced the garden’s functionality and appeal.
