Project Overview:

​

This project involved the renovation of the rear garden at Saiun-ji Temple, a Myoshin-ji sect temple located approximately 900 km from Kyoto in Miyagi Prefecture. The head priest, whom I met during his training at Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto, returned to his birthplace and commissioned the construction of a new tea house. He entrusted us with the surrounding garden’s design and construction.

Design and Planning:

​

　·Theme and Concept: Drawing inspiration from the temple's name, “Koryuzan” (Yellow Dragon Mountain), the garden's theme depicts a dragon resting peacefully. This design integrates the functional and serene aspects of a traditional tea garden.

　·Client Collaboration: Through close collaboration with the head priest, we developed a comprehensive plan that balanced aesthetic appeal with the practical needs of a tea garden.

Implementation:

 

　·Dragon-Themed Elements:

　　oTsuboniwa (Courtyard Garden): Adjacent to the tea house, a stone garden representing the dragon's head was created.

　　oMain Tea Garden: Using Aoi gravel stones to symbolize the sea, the main tea garden was designed to be viewed from the side entrance of the main hall. The garden’s boundary was marked with a Koetsu-ji style bamboo fence, representing the dragon’s body extending from the head.

　·Material and Climate Adaptation: Given the distance from Kyoto and the differing climate, innovative solutions were employed to work with the available materials.

Outcome:

 

The completed Saiun-ji Temple Garden harmonizes the thematic elements of a resting dragon with the tranquil ambiance of a tea garden. Despite the geographical and climatic challenges, the garden successfully embodies the serene beauty and functional design intended for the tea house setting.
